Bitumen is a hydrocarbon material with high viscosity and colloidal structure, and black to dark brown color and is completely dissolvable in Carbon Disulfide and Carbon Tetrachloride. Being impenetrable to moisture and water, electrical insulation, elasticity, moderate resistance against acids, bases and salts and adhesion to other materials are the most important features of bitumen.

The most production type of bitumen in the world is petroleum bitumen which is obtained from crude oil distillation and they are classified based on Penetration Grade (standard ASTM-D5).

The vast majority of bitumen is used by the construction industry, as a constituent of products used in paving and roofing. Excellent waterproofing characteristics and thermoplastic behavior make it ideal for a wide range of applications. At elevated temperatures (typically between 100 and 200 °C) it acts like a viscous liquid and can be mixed with other components and manipulated and formed as required. Once cooled, it is an inert solid that is durable and hydrophobic (repels water). Various terms are used to describe conventional bitumen such as straight run, paving grade and penetration grade (or ‘pen grade’). When people use these terms, they normally mean grades of bitumen that can be produced at a conventional refinery in a relatively simple way.  The vast majority of bitumen used in asphalt for road construction is conventional bitumen; that is why it is often known as paving grade. The term ‘pen grade’ is short for penetration grade, and reflects the fact that this type of product is often classified (in Europe and parts of Asia) using the penetration test. The term straight run refers to the fact that this type of bitumen is often produced directly from the vacuum distillation process, without any further modification. Bitumen grades can be classified as follows:

• Penetration Bitumen (30-40, 40-50, 60-70, 85-100, 80-100)
• Viscosity Grade (VG-10, VG-20, VG-30, VG-40)
• Cutback Bitumen (Rapid-Curing, Medium-Curing, Slow-Curing)
• Emulsion Bitumen (CRS, CMS, CSS)
• Oxidized Bitumen (75/30, 85/25, 85/40, 95/25, 105/35, 115/15)
• Modified Bitumen
